| Congress Brief Description: Congress debate - It's like the real thing, except hopefully with less corruption. You make, defend, attack, and vote on proposals and treat one another formally, role-playing as a Senator or Representative. Format: You write your own topics (bills and resolutions) and submit them to committees that may choose them for general debate. Otherwise, you have general info about others' potential topics so that you can research them in advance. Meetings: Tuesdays Captain: |
Lincoln-Douglas Sept - Oct 2007 topic: In the U.S. judicial system, truth seeking ought to take precedence over privileged communication. |
Brief Description: A philosophical debate - This is a one on one value / morality debate called "Lincoln Douglas Debate," modeled after the slavery debates had by Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas. Debate issues like the morality of nuclear weapons and the U.S.' role in the world or big-picture issues like whose rights come first if individual rights conflict with society's needs. Format: You need to prepare a case for BOTH SIDES of the resolution: one affirmative and one negative. (You will switch sides each round.) The focus is on the VALUE you uphold and which side better achieves the best value in the round. Meetings: Thursdays, by appointment. Email Jooyeon 1-2 days ahead if you're interested. Captain: |
Policy Year-Long 2007 topic: The United States federal government should establish an ocean policy substantially protecting marine natural resources. |
